Regarding the surgical procedures required during certification.
The procedural requirements of the Mexican Council for Aesthetic Surgery Certification (COMCCE) for board certification eligibility focus on understanding and being able to explain a range of specific medical procedures, and having the ability to effectively obtain informed consent from patients when appropriate. The examination also requires the actual demonstration of competence and safe performance of a smaller subset of specific procedures through direct observation.
The procedures that physicians seeking certification must understand and explain include:
Syllabus:
Cosmetic surgery
Blepharoplasty, surgical anatomy, aesthetic eyelid deformities, upper eyelid plasty (indications and techniques), lower eyelid plasty (indications and techniques), postoperative care in blepharoplasty, complications of blepharoplasty (prevention and treatment), facial rejuvenation surgery, concept of aging, surgical anatomy, patient selection, surgical techniques (subcutaneous, subfascial, subperiosteal, minimally invasive, suspensions), complications, forehead rejuvenation (indications, open and endoscopic surgical techniques, complications), midface rejuvenation (indications, open, endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques, skin cover management, SMAS management, complications), neck rejuvenation (indications, surgical techniques, skin cover management, muscle layer management, complications), complementary procedures to rhytidectomy (indications, techniques, liposuction, lipectomy, lipoinjection, surgical abrasion, chemical peel, laser, implants, Complications), baldness surgery (indications, patient selection, micrografts, flaps, tissue expansion), rhinoplasty (anatomy and physiology of the nose, aesthetic analysis, concept of aesthetics and nasal deformities, indications, incisions, dissection, alar cartilage reduction, dorsal reduction, osteotomies, septoplasty, immobilization, postoperative care, complications and their prevention and treatment), augmentation techniques in rhinoplasty (indications, bone grafts, cartilage grafts, other composite grafts, harvesting and application techniques), special problems in rhinoplasty (nasal tip surgery, thick skin, paranasal area, perialar area, nasolabial angle), secondary rhinoplasty (anatomical analysis, indications and limitations, treatment of bone, cartilage and skin covering problems), ear surgery (anatomy of the auricle, aesthetic analysis, deformities, prominent ears, constricted ears, others defects, surgical techniques, postoperative management, complications), profiloplasty (anthropometric analysis, chin surgery, cervical surgery, malar, chin and other facial implants), facial skeletal surgery (aesthetic analysis, physical anthropometry, cephalometry, radiology, analysis of dental models, frontal remodeling, orbital remodeling, malar osteotomies, midface problems, advancements, lengthening, shortening, indications, basic techniques: LeFort I, II and III, intermaxillary immobilization, rigid fixation, maxillary segmental osteotomies —indications, techniques, immobilization—, mandibular segmental osteotomies, genioplasty, mandibular remodeling), breast surgery (anatomy and physiology, aesthetic analysis, anthropometry, breast ptosis and correction techniques, breast hypertrophy and correction techniques, breast asymmetry and other deformities, breast hypoplasia, clinical analysis, implants —indications, types, complications—), abdominal aesthetic surgery (anatomy of the abdominal wall abdominal, aesthetic analysis of the abdomen and trunk, indications and techniques, complications), aesthetic correction of the pelvic region (anatomy, liposuction, lipectomy, indications, surgical techniques, complications), aesthetic correction of limbs (anatomy, liposuction, lipectomy, implants, indications, surgical techniques, complications), adjuvants in aesthetic surgery (botulinum toxin, chemical exfoliation, laser, hyaluronic acid and other modeling agents), adjuvant disease (etiopathogenesis, pathophysiology, treatment), body aging (biological theories, morphophysiological changes in organs, apparatuses and systems, therapeutic management in the elderly).
Procedures that require demonstration of competent and safe performance include:
Management of complications, doctor-patient relationship, safety guidelines and procedures in surgery, management of clinical records and informed consent.
Although COMCCE does not specify the exact number of each of the required procedures that must be performed to demonstrate competence, it is recommended that Master of Science in Aesthetic Surgery training programs teach students through an initial simulation, followed by supervised active participation (practical training), with the expectation that students will actively perform these supervised procedures.
Although many surgeons perform other procedures as part of their practice that are not required for board eligibility, it is expected that the principles of informed consent will be applied to these procedures where indicated, and competence in the relevant medical knowledge for each procedure will be demonstrated, including indications, contraindications, patient preparation methods, sterile technique, pain management, appropriate surgical marking techniques, surgical planning, and complication management. Adequate information and the results of the procedure will also be expected to be effectively communicated to the patient.
A representative from the evaluation committee is required to certify each candidate's knowledge and competence to perform the specified procedures in order to be eligible for board certification.
It is important to note that hospitals and healthcare systems may have procedural competency requirements that differ from those required for this board's certification. If you plan to enter practice or continue your training, you may want to consult with the institutions where you will be working to understand their procedural requirements and discuss them with your program director to ensure you meet those criteria before applying for this certification.
